What is Reiki?
Reiki was developed in the late 1800's by Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist. After mediating and fasting for 21 days he received Reiki as an intuitive download and he discovered the ability of healing through gentle or near touch. Usui then travelled to Japan and China to pass on his teachings and before he passed away in 1926 he elevated Dr Chujiro Hayashi and Mrs Hawayo Takata to Reiki Masters so that the teachings could continue to spread. By the late 1930's Reiki was bought over to the West by Mrs Hawayo Takata.
Today, Reiki is widely recognised and practiced around the world as a complementary therapy for promoting relaxation and healing. The NHS also acknowledge its healing benefits and are now known to offer it as a complementary therapy alongside conventional treatments.

The International Centre of Reiki Training estimates over 4 million people around the world have been trained in Reiki. This statistic highlights the power of Reiki as many who experience its healing capabilities then feel the call to learn the healing modality so that they too can spread the healing onto others.

Reiki is also know as universal life-force energy. Reiki practitioners are attuned to the Reiki symbols through a ceromony and then must complete numerous case studies on themselves and others to complete their certification. They can then be a channel for the universal life-force energy to flow through to help bring the clients Physical, Emotional and Energetic Self back into balance and harmony.

There are many different types of energy healing modalities. Reiki specifically uses life-force energy. To understand the concept better I like to think of radio waves. If you want to tune into a certain radio station, you set your radio to a specific frequency. That is the same for energy healing. Once a practitioner is attuned to Reiki they can tune into universal life-force energy and channel it through them and into the client.

We are energy and everything around us is energy. We can all feel energy to some level. If you walked into a room where two people are completely silent but have just had a blazing argument, you will feel it energetically. If you walked into a room straight after an amazing party and everyone was completely silent when you walked in, you would feel the buzz of the room immediately. Feeling energy is like practicing a muscle. Throughout a Reiki Practitioners training and practice, they will feel energy more and become increasingly sensitive to it. As the client, you may feel hot, cold or tingly sensations during the treatment, but you also might feel nothing at all. Both of which are completely normal and do not affect your ability to absorb the Reiki healing energy. Trust it will be taken in and go where it needs to go.

I have included part of my Reiki 2 coursework as it is a great way to visually demonstrate the power of Reiki. For the experiment we had to pot pea sprouts; three in a nice pot which was sent Reiki every time it was watered, and another three in a standard pot that had no Reiki sent to it. Both plant pots were kept in the same location and watered the same amount. Over the course of 3 weeks the pea sprouts that were sent Reiki all shot up, flowered and even grew pea pods, whilst the other pea sprouts that were sent no Reiki hardly grew and two of them completely wilted and died.
